Meet Popi

Meet Popi - the Tintex whanau's adopted Orangutan as part of our Give-Back strategy that sits within our broader ESG programme.

Popi was discovered being kept as someone's pet in the village of Sempatau in East Kalimantan - the Indonesian part of the Island of Borneo.

Borneo has for decades been the victim of corruption and deforestation due to the continued global demand for Palm Oil. Palm oil is the leading cause of deforestation in Asia which has led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Orangutan and other wildlife from their natural habitat.

The team at The Orangutan Project were alerted to Popi's existence as an 8 week old baby Orangutan who was no doubt taken and sold off illegally after her mother had died in the deforestation activities in the neighbouring Palm Oil plantations, near to the village of Sempayau. Whilst grateful that Popi was kept alive and cared for by this family in the village, it is both illegal and ill-advised for wildlife to be cared for by non-professionals. Organizations like The Orangutan Project play a vital role in rehabilitating and releasing these animals back into protected rainforests.

Tintex's monthly adoption contribution will go a long way to helping Popi and her friends get the right care and attention they need to make them fit and ready for release back into the wild.

We would like to thank all our clients for their many years of support and belief in supporting their own sustainability journeys, reducing their carbon footprints and continuing to build the local capability for clothing production in New Zealand.
